The business consultants said there was no market for the product, yet today FTS sells environmental monitoring solutions worldwide, counts millions in sales, employs over 75 people and is celebrating 40 years of reliability and innovation!

You have to wonder how the business consultants got it so wrong in 1980. Perhaps they didn’t grasp the importance of remote environmental data monitoring. Maybe they didn’t understand the power of emerging technology. They almost certainly didn’t anticipate the never-say-die attitude of the company’s founder, Bill Cave, and those who have followed him.

It was the late 1970s when Cave first imagined automating the collection of weather data by marrying radio telemetry to remote electronic monitoring stations. As a researcher with the Canadian Forest Service, he knew the systems were needed. Certain in his vision, he began developing his first prototypes in the basement of his home in Victoria, Canada and by 1980 he was taking out a $30,000 mortgage on his home to incorporate FTS.

At the beginning of November, as part of the “Serbia National Risk Management Program” project, CAE was awarded a new tender in the Balkan Republic, launched by Belgrade’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Administration, for the supply of meteorological equipment.

In addition to three complete meteorological stations, the order includes a first relevant supply of PG4i rain gauges. Moreover, to further complete the Customer service, CAE has also included advanced training, aimed at the personnel in charge, focusing on the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of the appliance.

The three meteorological stations, like almost all CAE stations, will be autonomous from the main power supply: they will be powered by a solar panel and backup battery, and each station will be equipped with state-of-the-art  technology...

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many events and exhibitions in the hydrometeorological sector have been cancelled or postponed. But even in these uncertain times, CAE keeps moving forward with several digital initiatives, among which HydrometLATAMVirtual 2021 - a 100% online event for weather, water and climate professionals in Latin America.

HydrometLATAM Virtual 2021, held from March 16 to 18, is the first of its kind in Latin America and hosted more than 858 participants from the region’s National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NHMS), governments, NGOs, experts from the private sector, academia, etc. While travelling is still severely restricted, the event brought together an audience from different countries into a unique virtual platform and helped develop a common understanding between public and private sector in terms of their priorities and partnership needs.

The Rise Fund, TPG’s global impact investing platform, has announced a US$100m strategic investment in Climavision, a newly launched weather services and intelligence platform powered by a private network of high-resolution radars, GPS-RO data and proprietary software to vastly improve the timing and accuracy of weather forecasting and to fill low-level gaps in existing weather surveillance.

Climavision was formed out of Enterprise Electronics Corporation (EEC), a commercial supplier of weather radar systems. EEC has a 50-year history and more than 1,200 installations across 95 countries. According to Climavision, by combining lower altitude, proprietary data with machine learning and AI technology, its offering provides 10x higher resolution and more accurate forecasting to address critical coverage gaps left by existing radar networks across the USA.
